Hello Dearest Selfcare enthusiast, welcome to our channel.
Where do we start from? I believe some of us can relate when we hear dry skin but we recently made a few videos with link somewhere within this blog post so you can check them out for yourself.
Interesting to know that dry skin in its self is a symptom for a broken skin barrier. Before we hit you with all this terminologies let's start by defining a few of the terminologies we will be using through this mini paper (blog post).
We also found that extreme dry skin not managed can accelerate wrinkling. You will learn more inside My Dry Skin Dairy. Link to join below. We will leave this link for a few weeks before we pull it down. We trust you will take advantage.
Terminologies:
1. Skin is the body's largest organ, made of water, protein, fats and minerals. Your skin protects your body from germs and regulates body temperature. Nerves in the skin help you feel sensations like hot and cold.
2. Dry skin is a common skin condition characterized by itchiness, scaling, cracking.
3. Skin barrier: To explain what the skin barrier is you will have to think about the skin in a structural manner. The outermost layer of the skin called the stratum corneum is often described as a brick wall, It consists of tough skin cells called corneocytes that are bound together by mortar-like lipids. This is your skin barrier.
Inside the skin cells, or “bricks,” you’ll find keratin and natural moisturizers. The lipid layer contains cholesterol, fatty acids, and ceramides.
This fantastically thin brick wall is literally keeping you alive. Without it, all sorts of harmful environmental toxins and pathogens could penetrate your skin and wreak havoc in your body.

To further dive into dry skin extensively we will also have to talk about skin barrier, seeing that an extreme dry skin issues is a part of the sign of a broken skin barrier.
Experiencing dry skin for an extended period without caring for it could lead to a damaged or broken skin barrier.

Dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma, has many causes, including cold or dry weather, sun damage, harsh soaps, and overbathing.
I struggled with the above condition for 1 year, it spread all over my body upto my neck, only my face was free of it and I treated the condition for another year.

Risk factors
Anyone can develop dry skin. But you're more likely to develop the condition if you:
Are over 40, as the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes with age.
Live in cold, windy conditions or low-humidity climates.
Have a job that requires you to immerse your hands in water, such as nursing or hairstyling.
Use your hands to work with cement, clay or soil.
Swim frequently in chlorinated pools.
Have certain diseases or conditions, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes or malnutrition.
Here are a few possible causes of dry skin.
Dry skin is due to water loss from the outer layer of skin. It might be caused by:
Environment: Living in cold, windy conditions or low-humidity climates and also dry weather conditions.
Too much bathing or scrubbing; taking long, hot showers or baths or scrubbing your skin too much can dry your skin. Bathing more than once a day can remove the natural oils from your skin too. Here is why we recommend to clients who have approached us with this conditions to wash with soap at night and simply run water on their body without soap by morning. We recommend soap bathing at night because of exposure to so much heat, dust, sweating and the feeling of stink after sweat drys off on your skin.
Air conditions : Over the years exposure to air conditioning.
Harsh soaps and detergents; many popular soaps, detergents, and shampoos strip moisture from your skin because they are formulated to remove oil.
Other skin conditions people with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or psoriasis are more likely to have dry skin.
Medical treatments; some people develop dry, thick skin after undergoing treatment for cancer, receiving dialysis, or taking certain medications.
Aging; As people age, the skin thins and produces less of the oils needed for the skin to retain water.
Nigerians scenario 🤣
Taking tricycles around town exposes your skin to pollutants in the air, the drying breeze of Kano, extreme sunlight, and that's why bathing at night is important. There is a need for balance though, especially if you have dry skin / Sensitive skin. Bath using MILD SOAPS AT NIGHT AND SIMPLY RINSE YOUR BODY THE NEXT MORNING. And for dry skin guys, it's not enough to use a moisturizer, layer it with body oil or butter to trap the moisture and retain it longer into your day.
Try to reverse all of this or the ones that apply to you to relieve the skin dryness.
